Physician Assistant Ophthalmology

The Physician Assistant is to provide comprehensive and quality care to patients in the VAMC by remaining fully accountable for adhering to established policies, standards of care and standards of practice, and demonstrating leadership and accomplishments when providing patient care and in developing and implementing programs which will improve the delivery of care relating to clinic and surgical treatment for neurosurgery. The incumbent is familiar with the specific needs related to the patient and the VA services provided. She/he assesses the physical, emotional and developmental status of patients and makes positive interventions to maintain, restore or improve health. The Physician Assistant responsibilities include managing new referrals, ordering needed test and making decisions based on those test results as to whether a given patient is a surgical candidate and whether to bring in the patient for initial consult. Other responsibilities include performing history and physical, getting clients to pre-op clearance and eventually to surgery. Once the patient has gone through surgery, he/she manages the post op care and eventual follow ups which usually include serial cat scans and visits. The Physician Assistant must closely monitor and evaluate studies presented at the initial consult and any other reports needed for surgery. Functions of Assigned Duties:
Develops monitors and alters a comprehensive health care treatment program through:
1. Formulating a comprehensive data base which includes a physical and psychosocial health history, physical examination, and evaluation of laboratory diagnostic testing, as indicated. 2. Discriminating between normal and abnormal findings in planning treatment intervention therapies. Collaborates with the supervisory/attending physician regarding abnormal findings. 3. Initiating and adjusting selected medications with formulary approval for inpatient and outpatients. 4. Facilitating the ordering of diagnostic tests, i.e., lab work, x-rays, EKGs, consults, and similar studies; documenting in the medical record all procedures performed for which the Physician Assistant is responsible. Orders for inpatients will be reviewed and signed by the managing physician in a timely fashion (within 24 hours). 5. Instituting and adjusting plans of care, utilizing Physician Assistant skills and nursing processes. 6. Initiating emergency treatment when indicated until a physician arrives. American Heart Association guidelines (CPR) will be followed. 7. Documenting clinical findings and progress in the medical record. 8. Stressing educational and rehabilitative goals, and health education, emphasizing patient and family/significant other participation in planning, treatment, and goal formulation. 9. Initiating and monitoring health maintenance in conjunction with the patient, family/significant other and members of the multi-disciplinary team. 10. Providing and promoting psychological support, in collaboration with multi-disciplinary team members, to patients and their support network. 11. Participating in interdisciplinary team conferences to assure the quality patient care management. 12. Participating in the quality assurance program. 13. Acting as consultant to nursing personnel, physicians and other health care consultants in their area of clinical experience. 14. Participating in the Service's research programs. 15. Determines appropriate admissions, discharges referrals and transfers to different levels of care and coordinates management of patient with supervisory physicians. NOTIFICATIONS:
This position is an AFGE Bargaining Unit position. Travel and relocation expenses are not authorized. This position is covered by a special rate. Selectee may be required to work at any Boston Healthcare System campus, as needed. Recent PA graduates who are eligible to take the Physician Assistant National Certifying Examination (PANCE) may be employed by VA on a temporary basis for a period not to exceed two years. The candidate must meet the following:
Graduate of a PA training program, or of a surgical assistant program which is accredited by the Accreditation Review Commission on Education for the Physician Assistant (ARC-PA) or one of its predecessor organizations; and A Bachelor's degree from an accredited PA training program or in another health sciences related field from an accredited college or university recognized by the U.S. Department of Education. Certification:
Current and continuous certification by the National Commission on Certification of Physician Assistants (NCCPA) is required for employment in VHA. Recent PA graduates who are eligible to take the Physician Assistant National Certifying Examination (PANCE) may be employed by VA on a temporary basis for a period not to exceed two years. If a PA's NCCPA certification is suspended, revoked or expires, the PA must be removed from the occupation which may result in termination of employment. References:

The check can be for multiple reasons such as signing bonus, supplies, etc. The victim will be instructed to deposit the check and use the money for any of these reasons and then instructed to send the remaining funds to the fraudster. The check will bounce and the victim is left responsible.
